Washington, DC: Three members of the US House of Representatives have introduced a resolution seeking to overturn former President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration that led to steep tariffs of up to 50 per cent on imports from India, describing the move as illegal and damaging to American workers, consumers, and US–India relations.
The resolution, introduced on Friday by Representatives Deborah Ross, Marc Veasey, and Raja Krishnamoorthi, aims to terminate the use of emergency powers to impose the additional import duties. The move follows a recent bipartisan Senate resolution that sought to end similar tariffs on Brazil and rein in the President’s authority to raise tariffs under emergency declarations.

According to an official release, the House resolution seeks to rescind the extra 25 per cent “secondary” tariffs imposed on Indian goods on August 27, 2025. These duties were levied in addition to earlier reciprocal tariffs, pushing total import duties on several Indian-origin products to as high as 50 per cent under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
Highlighting the economic fallout, Congresswoman Deborah Ross said North Carolina’s economy has strong trade and investment links with India, noting that Indian companies have invested more than USD 1 billion in the state and created thousands of jobs, particularly in the life sciences and technology sectors. She also pointed out that North Carolina-based manufacturers export hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of goods to India each year.
Congressman Marc Veasey echoed these concerns, stating that India is a key cultural, economic, and strategic partner of the United States. He said the tariffs effectively act as a tax on American households, particularly in North Texas, where families are already grappling with rising living costs.
The lawmakers warned that the continued imposition of such tariffs could strain bilateral ties and undermine economic cooperation between the two countries.
