Police have dismantled an illegal medicine manufacturing facility in Bihar’s Gaya district, arresting a key accused and bringing the total number of people held in the interstate counterfeit drug racket to nine. Officials said the factory was the second such unit discovered within a week as part of a wider crackdown on fake pharmaceutical networks.
The main accused, identified as Arun, allegedly ran the facility without certified chemists and used sophisticated machinery to manufacture large quantities of spurious medicines. Investigators recovered huge stocks of counterfeit tablets, chemical raw materials, and equipment used for tablet production during the raid.
Authorities said the seized items included over one lakh fake zinc tablets, tens of thousands of counterfeit antibiotic tablets, paracetamol powder, and several injectable ampoules. Investigators also found evidence that smuggled tramadol powder, valued at more than Rs 5 crore in international markets, had been processed into tablets and sold through fake medical supply outlets at inflated prices.
Police stated that the accused was traced after the interrogation of another suspect arrested earlier in the investigation. Further efforts are ongoing to identify additional members of the cartel, trace supply routes, and determine how widely the counterfeit medicines were distributed across different states.
