Bangladesh elections: BJP claims lone victory in Bhola

The Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), distinct from India’s political party of the same acronym, secured a solitary seat in the country’s 13th General Elections. Andaleeve Rahman Partho clinched victory in the Bhola-1 constituency, marking the party’s only success in the polls.

The Election Commission announced results for 297 seats, showing a dominant performance by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies, who together secured 212 seats. The BNP alone captured 209 constituencies, while minor partners, including the Bangladesh Jatiya Party, won one seat each.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its alliance partners claimed 77 seats, with Jamaat securing the majority of those victories. The National Citizen Party also recorded a small presence.

Partho defeated Jamaat candidate Md Nazrul Islam by a substantial margin. Ahead of polling on February 12, he had outlined an ambitious development agenda for Bhola, including the construction of the Bhola-Barishal bridge, establishment of a medical college, and expansion of domestic gas connections to strengthen the district’s infrastructure.
