The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday questioned industrialist Anil Ambani for over six hours in connection with an alleged ₹2,929-crore cheating case linked to Reliance Communications (RCom). The case stems from a complaint filed by the State Bank of India (SBI).
Ambani appeared at the agency’s headquarters around 10 am and left at approximately 5:15 pm, marking the second consecutive day of questioning. On Thursday, he had been grilled for nearly eight hours in connection with the same case. Officials said he was questioned on allegations of fund diversion, misappropriation, and irregularities in loan utilisation, and was confronted with key documents during the interrogation.
The CBI had registered the case in August last year, accusing Ambani and RCom of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and breach of trust. According to SBI’s complaint, the company had an outstanding debt of over ₹40,000 crore to multiple lenders, with SBI alone reporting losses of ₹2,929 crore based on 2018 figures.
In response, Ambani has denied all allegations. His spokesperson stated that he is fully cooperating with investigating agencies and will defend himself through legal channels. The statement also noted that the matter is sub judice and has been pending before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), the Supreme Court, and other forums for several years.
Sources further revealed that the agency conducted searches at Ambani’s Mumbai residence, ‘Sea Wind’, as part of the ongoing probe.
