The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Tuesday issued a new order aimed at streamlining the development and expansion of pipeline infrastructure across the country, amid rising concerns over gas supply linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict.
According to an official release, the government has notified the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution (Through Laying, Building, Operation and Expansion of Pipelines and Other Facilities) Order, 2026 under the Essential Commodities Act.

The newly introduced framework is designed to ensure a faster and more efficient rollout of pipeline projects by addressing long-standing issues such as delays in approvals and challenges related to land access. It also aims to facilitate the expansion of natural gas infrastructure, including in residential areas.
Published in the Extraordinary Gazette of India, the order comes into immediate effect and seeks to create a transparent, comprehensive, and investor-friendly system for gas distribution. The move is expected to accelerate infrastructure development while ensuring equitable access to cleaner energy sources.
The policy further focuses on expanding piped natural gas (PNG) networks, improving last-mile connectivity, and promoting the adoption of cleaner fuels for domestic, transport, and industrial use. The initiative is seen as a key step toward strengthening India’s energy security and advancing its transition to a gas-based economy.
