Residents across Delhi-NCR experienced mild tremors on Friday after a 5.9 magnitude Earthquake in Afghanistan struck near Darawan.
According to initial reports, the earthquake’s epicentre was located at coordinates 71.01°E and 36.52°N in Afghanistan. Tremors were also felt across several northern regions, including Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Kargil. Authorities confirmed that the tremors were mild, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.

The seismic activity coincided with unstable weather conditions in the capital. The India Meteorological Department reported light rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds following a dust storm that swept through the city earlier in the day. An orange alert has been issued for south, central, and New Delhi areas, while a yellow alert remains in place for southwest, west, and northeast districts.
Weather officials have forecast thunderstorms and lightning for Saturday, with temperatures expected to range between 20°C and 33°C.
This marks the second instance of tremors being felt in the region this year. Earlier in January, a minor quake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale struck New Delhi. As per the National Centre for Seismology, that quake occurred at a shallow depth of five kilometres, causing brief tremors across parts of the national capital.
