Raghuvanshi’s Obstructing Dismissal Triggers Fresh IPL 2026 Umpiring Controversy

Controversy continues to follow IPL 2026, with yet another umpiring decision sparking widespread debate among fans and experts alike. During the clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday, Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s dismissal for obstructing the field became the talking point of the match. The incident occurred in the fifth over of KKR’s innings when Prince Yadav delivered a ball that Raghuvanshi pushed towards mid-on. Attempting a quick single, the batter set off but was soon sent back by non-striker Cameron Green. As Raghuvanshi turned to retreat, Mohammed Shami collected the ball and aimed a throw at the striker’s end.In the process of getting back to his crease, Raghuvanshi appeared to move into the line of the throw before diving. The ball struck him, preventing a potential run-out attempt.

The fielding side immediately appealed for obstructing the field, prompting the on-field umpires to refer the decision upstairs. After reviewing the footage, the third umpire ruled Raghuvanshi out, citing a change in direction that obstructed the fielder’s attempt.

The young batter, who had scored 9 off 8 balls, looked visibly disappointed as he walked back. The decision also didn’t sit well with the KKR camp, as coach Abhishek Nayar was seen in an animated discussion with the fourth umpire. As per IPL regulations under Law 37.1.4, a batter can be given out if they significantly alter their running path and obstruct a fielding attempt, regardless of whether a run-out would have been successful. While the ruling aligns with the law, it has once again highlighted how interpretation can stir controversy in high-stakes matches.
