The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the India A squad for the upcoming ODI tri-series involving Afghanistan A and Sri Lanka A in Dambulla, Sri Lanka. The series is scheduled to begin on June 9, less than two weeks after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season.
Young batter Tilak Varma has retained the captaincy after previously leading India A during the South Africa A tour last year. Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Riyan Parag has been named vice-captain following Ruturaj Gaikwad’s promotion to the senior national side.
The squad features several fresh faces and exciting youngsters, but the biggest talking point is undoubtedly the inclusion of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The teenager had earlier represented India A in the Asia Cup Rising Stars tournament and has now earned his maiden unofficial ODI call-up. His selection highlights the selectors’ growing confidence in the young batter’s immense potential.
Priyansh Arya also returns to the setup, while wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan and explosive opener Abhishek Sharma, who featured in the South Africa A series, have not been included this time around. The selectors have also handed opportunities to Harsh Dubey and Suryansh Shedge, both of whom have impressed in domestic cricket.
India A’s pace attack will have a slightly new look due to injuries and workload management. Khaleel Ahmed misses out with injury, paving the way for Gujarat Titans pacer Arshad Khan. Yash Thakur, Yudhvir Singh, and Anshul Kamboj have also been included, while Harshit Rana remains unavailable due to injury. Senior pacers Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh are reportedly focusing on workload management and senior team commitments.
Following the completion of the ODI tri-series, India A will also play two multi-day red-ball matches against Sri Lanka A in Galle. However, the squad for those matches will be announced later. The BCCI confirmed that the fixtures are yet to be finalized, especially with India scheduled to face Afghanistan in a one-off Test match in Punjab from June 6 to 10.
