n Air India flight travelling from Phuket to New Delhi encountered unexpected mid-air turbulence on Tuesday, injuring 12 people onboard before landing safely at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
According to the airline, Flight AI2379 experienced a brief turbulence-related event while cruising at altitude, resulting in a momentary change in the aircraft’s altitude. Despite the incident, the Airbus A320 completed its journey safely, and all passengers and crew disembarked without further complications.

Initial reports indicate that 10 passengers and two cabin crew members sustained injuries during the turbulence. Air India clarified that none of the injuries were serious.
In an official statement, the airline said a small number of passengers and crew members who required medical attention were shifted to a medical facility at the airport for precautionary examination and treatment. Medical personnel and Air India’s airport team were deployed to assist those affected immediately after landing.
“The aircraft landed safely in Delhi, and all passengers and crew have safely disembarked,” the airline said, adding that it was extending all necessary assistance to those injured.
The airline also confirmed that it is cooperating with the relevant authorities as part of the investigation into the incident.
Although Air India did not immediately disclose the total number of passengers onboard, flight-tracking platform Flightradar24 showed that the Airbus A320 experienced a noticeable loss in altitude shortly before arriving in Delhi, consistent with reports of turbulence during the final phase of the journey.
Turbulence is a common phenomenon caused by sudden changes in airflow or weather conditions, though severe incidents leading to passenger injuries remain relatively uncommon. Aviation experts advise passengers to keep their seat belts fastened whenever seated, even when the seat belt sign is switched off, as unexpected turbulence can occur without warning.
Tuesday’s incident comes amid heightened attention on aviation safety, though Air India stressed that the flight remained under control throughout the event and landed without any operational issues.
The airline reiterated that all affected passengers were receiving appropriate care and that it would continue extending support wherever required. Authorities are expected to examine flight data and weather conditions to determine the exact cause of the turbulence-related altitude change.
The incident caused concern among passengers but concluded without any major damage to the aircraft or reports of critical injuries, with Air India assuring that passenger safety remained its highest priority.
