India are facing Sri Lanka in the first Test of their two-match series at the Galle International Stadium, but one notable absence from the Indian playing XI has caught the attention of fans. Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is not part of the team for the opening Test, despite initially being included in India’s squad for the series.
Bumrah remains one of India’s most important players across formats, particularly in Test cricket, where his experience and ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs have made him a key part of the bowling attack.

Why is Jasprit Bumrah Not Playing?
Bumrah has been ruled out of the entire Test series against Sri Lanka after failing to fully recover from a left knee injury. The injury was sustained during India’s ODI series against England.
His inclusion in the squad had initially been made subject to his fitness. However, with the start of the Sri Lanka series approaching, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that the fast bowler had not recovered sufficiently to take part in the two-Test series.
The BCCI subsequently named Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi as Bumrah’s replacement in the Indian squad. Nabi earned his opportunity following impressive performances in domestic cricket.
The BCCI said Bumrah had not yet fully recovered from the left knee injury he suffered during the ODI series against England and therefore would miss the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka.
Bumrah’s absence leaves India without one of its leading strike bowlers for the series and places greater responsibility on the other members of the pace attack.
Shubman Gill Explains India’s Playing XI
India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first in the opening Test in Galle. Speaking at the toss, Gill said the pitch appeared good for batting and the weather conditions were also favourable.
Gill also confirmed that India had retained the same playing XI they used in their previous match. The team has opted for a five-man bowling attack, consisting of two fast bowlers and three spinners.
Gill described the occasion as particularly special, as the Test is being played on India’s Independence Day and is also the 600th Test match for the country.
“It’s a very big honour for me, every time you get an opportunity to lead your country,” Gill said, adding that the occasion was even more special because of Independence Day and the landmark Test.
India’s Playing XI
India went into the first Test with Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Manav Suthar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
With Bumrah unavailable, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna form India’s pace combination, while Jadeja, Suthar and Kuldeep provide the spin options.
The Indian team will hope the bowling attack can compensate for Bumrah’s absence as the visitors look to make a strong start to the two-match series in Sri Lanka.
