MARGAO: Taking cognisance of messy situations in the markets, the Margao Municipal Council has served a 30-day deadline on the SGPDA to tackle the nuisance in the wholesale fish market or risk disconnection of water and electric connection without further notice.
In a notice issued under section 252 of the Goa Municipalities Act, MMC Chief Officer Deepali Naik directed the PDA to stop cutting and cleaning of fresh fish at the wholesale fish market and also prevent stagnation of discharge of water to prevent nuisance and health hazard in the locality. “There’s no cleanliness maintained in the market and the area is full of stench. Unbearable bad odour emanates from the market due to stagnation of sewage. The wholesale fish market continues to operate in unhygienic condition,” the notice stated, adding that the market has become an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes and a source of nuisance and health hazard.
Incidentally, the Chief Officer recalled that the Margao civic body on July 1 last had issued instructions to the SGPDA to stop cutting and cleaning of fresh fish at the wholesale fish market within 24 hours, but in vain.
Meanwhile, the committee constituted by the District Magistrate to go into the problems plaguing the wholesale fish market has recommended a total stop to retail sale of fish in the wholesale fish market. Syed Iftiyaz, who submitted the recommendations to the Magistrate on Friday, has suggested setting up of a wholesale fish cutting junction for the benefit of wholesale buyers. He has underlined the need for collection of marine and other waste on a daily basis, while recommending setting up of effluent and sewerage treatment plants on a priority basis. A recommendation was made
to clean up the fields adjoining the wholesale fish market of the waste scattered
all around.
