Rains affect normal life in State

Incessant rains affected normal life in the State, as incidents of uprooting of trees, damage to houses and disruption in utilities were reported in many places since Monday evening.
CALANGUTE CORRESPONDENT ADDS: A woman had a miraculous escape, after a tree came crashing down on a house at Naikka Vaddo, Calangute, early Monday morning.
The house belonging to one Laxmi Kalangutkar was completely damaged, causing a loss of about Rs 75,000. Luckily, Laxmi’s daughter Rekha, who was sleeping in the house, had a miraculous escape.
The house, which is made up of mud, gave in due to the weight of the huge tree. Mapusa fire personnel later cut the tree and cleared the place.
Calangute Sarpanch Laxman Parab Palyekar and the ward member were present at the site to take stock of the situation.
Speaking to Herald, Laxman Parab Palyekar said: “We will try to provide her necessary assistance to re-construct the collapsed house. We will also extend her the scheme meant for the poor to re-construct the damage house. We will try our best to help the Kalangutkar family in the hour of need.”
OLD GOA CORRESPONDENT ADDS: Three trees were uprooted in various parts of Old Goa, blocking the road for vehicular traffic.
According to Old Goa fire station office, the Old Goa-Pilar road was blocked for traffic, after three huge trees were uprooted and fell on the road, snapping electricity wires at Mandur, Churchwada-Neura, on Monday evening.
Fire Station Officer Mathew Baganza along with his officers S N Vengurlekar, D V Sinari, K H Goankar, A M Chodankar and S S Tari rushed to the site and cleared the road.
In another incident that took place on Tuesday at about 7.30 am, a Gulmohar tree uprooted on the road, blocking vehicular traffic along the PDA-Corlim road near Funskool Factory, while another Gulmohar tree cam crashing down near Dr Rane’s residence at Ribandar at about 9 am.
BICHOLIM CORRESPONDENT ADDS: Property worth Rs 20,000 was damaged, after a tree fell on a house at Kamraan Chodan, Bicholim, on Monday night.
The Bicholim fire force officials were kept on their toes, as in several places the roads were blocked due to uprooting to trees.
According to reports, house belonging to one Ramrai Kesarkar from Kamraan Chodan was damaged when a Gulmohar tree fell on his house, causing a loss of property worth Rs 20,000. The fire force officials cleared the debris and saved property worth Rs 40,000.
At Sonarbhat-Ladphem, a compound wall was damaged and the traffic along the road was disrupted when a tree came crashing down on the road. Similar cases were reported at Kasarpal-Bicholim. The fire force officials under the supervision of L S Naik cleared the road.
