2 booked for assaulting driver
PANJIM: The Panjim police have booked two unidentified men for physically assaulting a government driver, attached to Raj Bhavan on the night of January 5 at Caranzalem.

Narayan Palkar was on duty when two men, who could not be identified then, gheraoed and assaulted him. They escaped soon thereafter leaving the victim. Palkar who was wounded was later given medical assistance.
The motive behind the attack has not been ascertained and the assailants are yet to be traced.
A case under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 427 (mischief) and 34 (common intention) of IPC was registered against the persons and investigation is underway.
Duo held for van theft
MARGAO: Two persons ~ Sumeet Gunaji Pradhan, a native of Nagpur, Maharashtra and Ratan Dattan Singh, a native of UP have been arrested for theft of a Maruti van.
Robot-52 staff comprising of PC Kishore Bandekar and PC driver Gajanan Patil who were on night patrolling on January 7 night spotted the Maruti van parked by the side of a motorcycle between KTC depot and Fatorda stadium at 2.10 am of January 8. When intercepted, the occupants on noticing the police, fled from the van, but were nabbed after a hot chase. The van was attached. Later at 8.30 am on January 8, one Narayansingh Rajput, Dongorim-Navelim complained to the Margao police that his Maruti van GA-01-C-7429 which was parked outside his residence has been stolen. Since the duo was found in procession of the Maruti van, they were arrested for theft under section 379 IPC. PSI SG Chavan is conducting further investigation to verify accused involvement in various thefts.
2 thefts reported at Gogol
MARGAO: In two theft incidents at Gogol, Margao, unknown miscreants entered in two houses and stole cash, gold and other articles all worth Rs 9.80 lakh by removing window grill on the intervening night of January 4-5. Sailesh Desai, Sarthak Bungalow, near Trimurti Hospital, Gogol in his complaint to the Margao police stated that between 11.15 pm on January 4 to 5 am the next day, unknown accused entered his house by removing grill of the bedroom and committed theft of cash Rs 1.30 lakh and gold ornaments worth Rs 7 lakh when inmates were asleep. An offence under sections 454, 457 and 380 of IPC has been registered against unknown persons. In the second case that took on the same day and around the same time, unknown persons effected entry into the house of Zamira D’Souza, opposite Trimurti Hospital, Gogol by breaking open the window grill of dinning room when inmates were asleep and decamped with 2 gold earrings, 2 gold chains and 1 Canon camera all worth Rs 1.50 lakh. A complaint was filed with Margao police by D’Souza and an offence under sections 457 and 380 of IPC has been registered against unknown persons. Further investigation in both cases is in progress.
K’taka native held for theft
MARGAO: Margao police arrested one Basu Shankar Marathe from Hanuman temple, Dandeli, Karnataka and presently residing at Margao for committing theft of mangalsutra worth Rs 40,000.
Police have recovered the mangalsutra from the accused.
Jaibun Jaffar Shaik of Sirvodem, Margao filed complaint that on January 7 at 5.30 pm when she was walking along the road near the railway station, behind Hotel Srinivas Residency, Calconda, Marathe pounced on her, strangulated her neck and decamped with her mangalsutra.
PSI Daigo Gracias along with ASI Chandrakant Talawanekar Head Constables Anil Gaonkar and Ganapath Naik rushed to the spot, apprehended Marathe and recovered the mangalsutra. An offence under section 392 of IPC has been registered against Marathe and police are interrogating to verify his involvement in other cases.
Agonda Sarpanch faces no-trust
CANACONA: Four panchas including the deputy sarpanch have moved a no-confidence motion against Agonda Sarpanch Dajula Pagui.
According to sources, the signatories to the motion alleged that the sarpanch was not available to the public to address their grievances and was not taking the panchas into confidence in any local body issues. Incidentally, locals including most of the panchas were aggrieved that the sarpanch had skipped at-least two-three Gram Sabhas.
Headland Sada temple burgled
VASCO: Burglars broke into a temple in Headland Sada for the second time in a month and decamped with cash of Rs 1,500 from three donation boxes.
According to Mormugao Police, the incident took place at the Ganapati Sansthan sometime between 9.30 pm on Monday and wee hours of Tuesday. The burglars broke open the door of the Sansthan and stole cash of Rs 1,500 from the donation boxes. Police said the Sansthan priest went to the Sansthan early Tuesday morning to perform daily rituals, when he found the door open and cash missing from the donation boxes. Police further informed that the priest immediately alerted the Sansthan president, who filed a police complaint in the matter. Mormugao Police have registered an offence against some persons and is investigating the case.
Seminar on higher education
MARGAO: A national seminar on the topic “Re-visioning higher education in the global context” will be held on January 13, at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. Former Union Minister, Adv Ramakant Khalap will deliver the keynote address on the occasion.
Institutions run by VVM include Shree Damodar College of Economics, Kare College of Law, RMS Higher Secondary school, IGNOU, Vidya Vikas Academy, Vidya Vikas Academy higher secondary school, Gaunekar Institute of Management and the Centre for Professional Education & Research.
Arabian Nights food festival
MARGAO: Arabian Nights, a food festival will be held on January 11, at Indismart Woodbourne Resort — the training hotel of the Institute of Advanced Management, Nuvem.
The food festival would present various regional cuisines spanning the Arab world, from Tunisia to Saudi Arabia, incorporating the Levantine, Egyptian, and other traditional cuisine.
The students will offer the famed Arabic food by mixing the traditional delicacies with the modern palate to make this a unique gastronomic experience right from the soups and starters to the desserts. This would be served with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The evening entertainment, organized by the students, includes Belly dancers, fashion shows, fire charmers and dances.
Sensitisation workshop on crimes
PANJIM: The Goa State Commission for Women will organise a sensitisation workshop on crimes against women on January 13, at Nalanda hall, EDC House, Panjim, from 10 am to 1 pm.
Trek to Vagheri Hills
PANJIM: The Youth Hostels Association of India, Margao unit will organise a trek to Vagheri Hills of Western Ghats in Sattari Taluka on January 13.
The participants will leave from Margao by a special bus at 8:30am from KTC bus stand and will return the same evening.
The main aim of this programme is to inculcate the spirit of adventure and create love of nature among the participants. The participants will get an opportunity to trek through dense forest, crossing the river streams to explore the picturesque view of Sattari and surrounding areas of neighbouring States.
The programme is open to all YHAI members, non-members and students towards the registration fees of Rs 200. Participants are requested to carry packed lunch, water bottle and other necessary items while trekking.

Lok Adalat in Panjim
PANJIM: The Permanent and Continuous Lok Adalat will be held on January 12, in the Court Hall of the District Judge 1 and Assistant Sessions Judge at Panjim from 10 am. The adalat will take up the cases of claim petitions arising out of motor accident, civil and criminal matters of trial court etc., pending in the North Goa, for settlement.
The concerned parties and advocates whose cases have been referred to the Lok Adalat are requested to attend the same.

Sahil felicitated
PANJIM: Sahil Sujan Naik was felicitated by Treasurer of Sridora Caculo College of Commerce and Management Studies, Ramnath Burye at the college’s annual gathering held recently.
Sahil Sujan Naik secured 93 per cent marks in Financial Accounting B.Com exam conducted in October 2012. The results were declared on January 3.
Music diplomas for Nadine, Devesh
PANJIM: Nadine Nicole D’Silva (piano) and Devesh Narayan (violin) were awarded with international diplomas in music performance from the London College of Music – University of West London, UK in December 2012.
The diploma is a high qualification in music, and reflects the maturity of performance standards.
London College of Music examinations are held at over 250 centres across the world. A broad range of subjects are offered in music as well as in drama and communication, catering to candidates at all levels –from introductory examinations for beginners through graded exams to professional diplomas in performing, teaching, composition and research.
This year three school choirs ~ Hamara School Choir, Don Bosco School Choir, Panjim and SFX Music School Choir, Siolim, supported by the NAMAH Society all earned Distinction in the Ensemble Examinations.
IMA Executive Committee installed
PANJIM: The Margao Branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) hosted the installation ceremony of IMA, Goa State at Babu Naik Hall, Margao recently.
President of IMA, Margao, Dr Naguesh Pai Kakode welcomed.
Dr Sanjeev Dalvi, DHS Director was the chief guest.
The Goa State Executive Committee of IMA was installed. The new office bearers are Dr Gladstone D’Costa (President), Dr Rahul Borkar (Secretary) and Dr Suraj Prabhudesai (Treasurer).
Air Chief Marshall (Retd) Dr L K Verma was the main speaker at the Continuing Medical Education programme, which was attended by around 150 doctors.
Dr Sanjeev Dalvi, Dr V N Jindal, Dean of Goa Medical College and Sanjeev Joglekar and Dr Mohan Girap of GSPCB participated in the panel discussion.
Dr Ajay Keni, Consultant Chest Physician from Kolhapur delivered a talk on ‘Approaches to Obstructive Airway Disease’.
