MARGAO: Curtorim Gymkhana prevailed over Saligao United 6-4 via tie-breaker to enter the final of 41st HQ-NRB Bandodkar memorial inter-village football tournament organized by Baina Sports Club, at MPT ground, Vasco, on Friday.
The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation period.
Both the teams started off brightly with attacks and counterattacks.
Mario Mascarenhas broke the deadlock in the 8th minute through a brilliant header off a Nelson Fernandes’ cross.
Saligao United hit back immediately and restored parity in the 14th minute through Trevor Dias, who coolly slotted the ball past the keeper with a side foot finish.
With the teams coming on level terms, as the match progressed they went into attacking mode for the elusive winner.
Post resumption, Curtorim Gymkhana and Saligao United continued from where they had left and showed urgency with attacks and counter attacks. However, both the teams’ defenders were rock solid at the back to make sure they do not let in more goals at the end of regulation time.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Nelson Fernandes, Savio Fernandes, Bruno Fernandes, Joaquim Carvalho and Neville Fernandes converted for Curtorim Gymkhana while Paulo Joao, Jayesh Chopdekar and Agnelo Quadros were on target for Saligao United.
Defender Savio Fernandes of Curtorim Gymkhana who played stellar role for his team was adjudged man-of-the-match. Curtorim Gymkhana will now clash with United Club of Nerul in the final on June 29.
