PANJIM: In a relief to western coasts including Goa, Cyclone ‘Tej’, brewing in the Arabian Sea, intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm on Sunday and headed towards the Yemen-Oman coasts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Earlier, it was expected to impact western coasts of Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat.
In a statement, IMD said the very severe cyclonic storm ‘Tej’ over west-central and adjoining southwest Arabian Sea intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm, moved northwestwards with a speed of 16 kmph and lay centered at 8:30 hours IST of Sunday over the same region, about 160 km east-southeast of Socotra (Yemen), 540 km south-southeast of Salalah (Oman) and 550 km southeast of Al Ghaidah (Yemen).
“It is very likely to move northwestwards and cross Yemen-Oman coasts between Al Ghaidah (Yemen) and Salalah (Oman), close to east of Al Ghaidah (Yemen) around noon of October 24, 2023, as a very severe cyclonic storm with wind speed of 115-125 kmph gusting to 140 kmph,” the IMD said.
The IMD said the depression over west central Bay of Bengal moved west-north westwards and lay centered at 0830 hours IST of Sunday over the same region, about 590 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 740 km south of Digha (West Bengal), and 880 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).
“’It is likely to further intensify into a deep depression during the next 12 hours,” the IMD added.
