PANJIM: Merces panchayat found alleged illegally dumped hazardous waste, during an inspection on Thursday.
According to information shared by Merces Manch Welfare Association, an inquiry at the site found illegal burning of garbage and dumping of hazardous hospital waste. Panchanama was recorded in the presence of complainant Arturo D’Souza and Merces Manch Welfare Association members.
“Goa Pollution Control Board official Sebastian Barreto was deputed to check the site and he verified the hazardous, poisonous materials and other non-permissible scrap dumps which are bad for health. As this is low-lying paddy fields the surrounding can be polluted including the creek water and fishing activities,” states a press release issued by the Merces Manch.
Based on a complaint by the Manch, Public Grievance Cell Under Secretary had instructed the Panchayats Director to order an inspection of the site following which Merces panchayat secretary and sarpanch inspected the alleged illegal activities of hoarding and burning hazardous, poisonous chemical waste, hospital/hotel waste during the night hours.
The Manch has urged the concerned authorities to initiate strict action against illegalities and start legal proceeding against the owners/tenants for allowing hazardous pollution.
