VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Wednesday unanimously resolved and approved the proposed waste-to-energy facility project at its solid waste management plant located at Headland Sada.
This is second such facility in state after Saligao plant and this project would be taken up through BITS Pilani as a pilot project where segregated organic wet waste and septic waste of 5 tonnes per day will be used to generate electricity. The proposal was approved during a special council meeting held on Wednesday.
“In fact the proposal waste-to-energy facility project was made through the office of DMA. A similar project funded by Central government is going on at BITS Pilani and by using this facility we would be able to generate electricity using wet waste and septic waste. The only issue that could create hurdles in making this project is collection of mixed waste and hence directions has been issued to the door-to-door garbage contractor to collect only segregated waste from households and other establishments,” MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik said.
Hosts of other issues such approval of installation of toy train in municipal park, discussion and approval on the letter received from GSUDA regarding the approval of conceptual plan for the construction work of multi-storeyed (9 floor) parking at MMC garage site in Vasco, development of Baina garden using MPLAD funds or through forest department, setting up of sewerage pumping station near Hindu crematorium in Vasco etc. were discussed during the meeting. The meet turned noisy over MMC’s failure to take up pre-monsoon works in Vasco on time.
Several councillors raised their strong concerns over MMC’s failure in taking up pre-monsoon works in their respective wards. Chairperson Deepak Naik informed that this year the problem came to fore because of pending approval from DMA’s office to take labourers for pre-monsoon works.
