MAPUSA: Roopa Bhakta was on Friday elected unopposed as chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC).
In the election held in the municipal hall, Deputy Collector Pandurang Khorjuvekar after scrutinizing the nomination papers stated that he received only two nominations and both are from Bhakta. Since there was no other candidate in the fray, Khorjuvekar declared Bhakta elected unopposed. Bhakta’s candidature was proposed by Sandeep Falari and seconded by Sudhir Kandolkar.
Later, Bhakta thanked the council members for having elected her as chairperson and said she would carry out pending development works of her predecessor, Sandeep Falari.
“My main priority will be the construction of new market complex,” she said.
The post of MMC chairperson had fallen vacant after former chairperson Falari resigned on January 7. The notice for electing new chairperson was issued by the collector and Deputy Collector Khorjuvekar was appointed as the presiding officer to conduct the election.
