Chinchinim village on Monday got a new Sarpanch, who has promised to put the controversial market complex-cum-panchayat ghar project on the right track.
Constancio Fernandes was elected sarpanch of the 11-member Chinchinim village panchayat in the elections held on Monday.

After the election, Constancio told Herald that he is committed to realise the dream of Chinchonkars to have the spacious market complex cum panchayat ghar on the acquired land. “I would accord priority for the construction of the market complex cum panchayat ghar as per the original licence. My predecessor tried to bypass the panchayat decision by suggesting to the GSIDC to build only the panchayat ghar on the acquired land”, he said.
Replying to a question, Constancio said the new body would ensure that the decision to build the market complex and panchayat ghar to the logical conclusion.
“The market complex is expected to enrich the panchayat coffers by Rs four lakh every month. Besides, the complex will help achieve the long pending demand of the villagers to have a spacious market”, he added.
