A good man in your corner

He now heads the TTAG and will provide sage advice to the denizens that inhabit the hallowed tourism department. In addition, this gentleman loves football, having played it at the State level and as an honorary secretary with the Goa Football Association. Savio Messias lives a very hectic life but still maintains his cool and his face always lit up by that smile. He spoke to Ajit JoHn about his approach to life

Savio Messias is involved in two of the State’s prominent industries, tourism and football. Two industries which evoke much comment and also induce every Goan to have a view about.
Savio’s day starts pretty early. He is up at 5.30 in the morning perhaps even before the milk booths start their work. He then leaves for a brisk walk that lasts around 45 minutes. Invigorated, he returns home to prepare for the day ahead. The papers are perused in great detail followed by a hearty breakfast. He then leaves for the church near his house. This is followed by his daily visit to the New Dawn Ashadeep Special School which caters to kids with special needs. As a member of the trust, he is present regularly. It gives him peace of mind. It also takes him away from his regular world that is dominated by issues relating to the world of tourism and football.
Savio’s life is so hectic, he hardly ever has time to watch movies. He watches perhaps one or two movies a year. One was a Konkani movie and the second one was an English movie, he says which one several Oscars at this year’s Oscar awards. He was however unable to remember the name.  His taste in music   runs to country music and he likes it retro. As a genre that is built around stories, he quite enjoys it.
Like any sportsman, active or retired he quite likes his food. He prefers his Goan cuisine. For him nothing can beat the tongue roast and prawn balchao. He enjoys going over to the small restaurants located in the nooks and crannies in the State. When he travels out of the State within the country or abroad, he relies on Lonely Planet for recommendations. And, he has never been disappointed. Books have never been a favourite companion. As he puts it rather plainly “My life is full of activity and I don’t do much reading. I however read the paper thoroughly in the morning”.
If there is anything that moves him greatly, it is football. He played at the school, college and club level in the State. And his holidays which are taken religiously every year take a twist every four years when the world cup football tournament is held. He has travelled extensively across Europe and Brazil but he has watched matches in three world cup tournaments. South Africa, Germany and Brazil were great experiences for him and he watched around 6 matches during a three week stay.
He has strong definite views with regards to the improvement in the standard of the game in the State but then this is not that kind of article. Perhaps it could be an ideal topic for some other time. Asked what he intended to do in five years, he smiled and said “I am developing my beach property into a farm. I intend to sit in a chair and enjoy the fruits of my labour.” Cheers to that
