Long wait irks selected IT candidates from Goa

IT job aspirants in Goa who attended campus interviews for jobs are feeling nervous as the wait to hear from the companies by which they were hired is agonisingly long. VIKANT SAHAY interacted with a few job aspirants as well as companies who hire to find that many of the Goan start-up companies are doing better in terms of the promises they made to students during the campus recruitment drive

What one commits, one must deliver. This is the basic minimum what a fresher out of college expects from the recruiters who come down to their campus to conduct recruitment. The ground reality however is quite different. Delays in delivery of appointment letters makes candidates suffer as they feel the pressure from peers and parents.
Some candidates in Goa have been victims of companies faltering on their promises. “I am on the verge of losing one year as I have no option but to wait for my appointment letter. Sometimes I feel that I should have taken a job with a start-up rather than a big company. It frustrates me to see my friends already working even though we appeared for campus interviews and tests around the same time,” said a candidate on condition of anonymity.
Making matters worse is news of Infosys laying off of nearly 3000 employees. News like this doesn’t help soothe the nerves either.
But on a positive note, young start-ups based in Goa have demonstrated more responsibility towards the candidates who they selected from campus and have stuck to their promises to a large extent.
Milind Prabhu, CEO of Genora Infotech believes that Goan engineers have an edge in English communication which actually plays a major factor during recruitment process. “We just have to train them (new recruits) in various technologies like android, IOS, BOTS and Hadoop. Training process usually takes about two months before they actually start working on live projects,” said Mr Prabhu.
Genora Infotect since July 2015 has recruited about 20 people from GEC, PCCE, Agnel Institute of Technology and REIT. “This year alone we recruited 11 engineers from four colleges. The count is expected to grow to at least 25 in the coming year. Yes, we promise and we deliver,” said Mr Prabhu.
Similarly, HR Manager of Umang Software Uma Talaulikar says that her company has hired eight personnel since July 2015 out of which seven are engineering graduates in computer and information and technology from either SRIET, Don Bosco or GEC.
“We do not hire to fire. We look for the skills and attitude of a candidate and not just the academics and percentages. Hence, we conduct two to three levels of technical interviews to identify the right candidate. Once selected, we immediately give them an offer/appointment letter. The joining time varies depending on the position they are hired for and the experience level, however usually we ask then to join within a month,” added Ms Talaulikar.
Parinati Solutions is a company which has its development center at Nuvem and they have a unique way of having their selection of candidates. The company directly contacts Training and Placement Officers (TPO) of various colleges and meet with them in their development center to sieve out talent. The company then calls the candidates to their center for final selection process for training. “Since July 2015, we have recruited at least 37 candidates from Goa and all have joined. I feel the quality of freshers here are quite good,” Shuvra Hede, senior HR executive of Parinati Solutions said.
Open Destination is another big IT- based solution company which has over 350 employees and more than 300 of them are Goans. Open Destination normally does not visit campuses in Goa for recruitment. “I feel that local engineering colleges are not interested in Goa-based industries. There is no proper coordination between the college and the requirement of the industry. Also, our big concern is the quality of students. Hence, we hire either through advertisement of referrals made by our own employees,” said Milind Anvekar, vice president, projects and customer services, Open Destination.
Director Operation of Anant Infomedia, Kiran Kulkarni said that
AIPL recruitment team visited three colleges for campus recruitment who completed their final exams in June 2016. “We offered jobs, as a trainee, to a total of 15 students of which 10 students accepted our offer and all of them joined our organisation,” said Mr Kulkarni.
