Woman drowns in Zuari
VASCO: A 55-year-old woman from Dabolim reportedly drowned in Zuari river at Matvem-Dabolim on Wednesday.

Vasco Police was informed that a female body was floating in the river near St Anthony’s Cross at Matvem-Dabolim. The woman was identified as Saku Sawant.
Police learnt that Saku used to sell flowers at the Cross and would often spend the nights there.
Vasco police sent the body for an autopsy at Hospicio in Margao, before handing it over to her family for the final rites.
Held for outraging modesty
VASCO: Mormugao Police arrested a 42-year-old man on charges of outraging the modesty of a woman near a bus stop at Mormugao jetty.
According to Mormugao Police, the victim complained that the incident occurred on Monday at about 8 pm while she was waiting for a bus near Laxmi Chambers bus stop, Mormugao jetty.
Acting on the complaint, Mormugao Police arrested the accused Gynendra Dubay.
One arrested for assault
CANACONA: Canacona Police arrested a man from Fulamol-Canacona on charges of assaulting two persons in the area.
According to Canacona Police, Dhaki Bhavadan (43) of Karvem complained that her brother-in-law, Babo Bhavdam, had allegedly assaulted her husband with a wooden stick, kicks and slaps.
The complainant further stated that the accused also assaulted her daughter, injuring her. She stated that the accused also abused and threatened them dire consequences.
Canacona Police arrested the accused and later released him on bail.
Man succumbs to accident injuries
CURCHOREM: A 40-year-old resident of Voilawado, Amona-Quepem, succumbed to accident injuries at GMC Hospital in Bambolim.
According to Quepem Police, Minio Fernandes who had sustained injuries was admitted in GMC Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Calangute sarpanch resigns
CALANGUTE: Calangute Sarpanch Ana Maria C D’Souza has tendered her resignation from the post. D’Souza tendered her resignation to the Director of Panchayats after completing one year in office in a mutual agreement between the women panchas.
D’Souza was elected as sarpanch on May 28 shortly after the panchayat polls.
Assessment of collective farming
CANACONA: Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) and Goa Shipyard Ltd recently conducted a mid-term assessment programme of Cotigao and Gaondongrim Agri-Collective Farming Co-Op Societies in Canacona.
TISS team senior research associate Rashmi Chordiya, research associate Shrvari Joshi, consultant Ramanna Killi, besides GSL Vasco Project Officer Francis Fernandes along with both societies’ office bearers and stakeholders participated.
While making their own technical assessment of scope of developments of GSL-CSR agri-collective farming at Cotigao and Gaondongrim, the team also tried its best to build stakeholders’ confidence and guided them for sustainable development in near future.
At Gaondongrim, Chairman Barkelo P Velip along with his 25 stakeholders, while at Cotigao, Chairman Datta Velip, Secretary Ashok Gaonkar, Umesh Gaonkar along with 30 stakeholders participated in separate interactions.
TISS project officer Ulhas Pai Bhatikar welcomed, while extension officer of GSL CSR Prasad Velip proposed the vote of thanks.
Man held with illegal firearm
MARGAO: Acting on a tip off, the Margao police on late Tuesday night raided a bar at Navelim and arrested one Raju Devar, from whom they recovered an illegal pistol.
He has been remanded to seven days police custody.
Margao Police station in-charge, PI Sudesh Naik, informed that the Margao police had received a tip-off about possession of the illegal fireman by Devar.
Replying to a question, the PI said the Margao police will interrogate the accused to find out the source from where he had procured the firearm.
Police said the accused, who is a resident of Azad Nagar, near Rajendra Prasad stadium, Margao, was allegedly found in a drunken state when they swooped down on the bar.
An offence under section 3 and 25 of the Arms Act has been registered against Devar.
Three arrested for theft, assault
MARGAO: The Cuncolim police acting swiftly arrested three people involved in assault and theft at Cutbona, Velim fishing jetty, on Wednesday, and recovered the stolen property.
Vilesh Agan Butiya, working on a trawler named Silver Sea owned by Cruz Charles, on Wednesday morning complained to the police that unknown accused assaulted him and four others and snatched from them Rs 300 and a Nokia mobile set during the wee hours.
Cuncolim PI Raju Raut Desai along with his staff managed to arrest the three persons by noon.
Their names were given as Raj Ganpath Shekar (20), Selvus Pius Serkar (22), both natives of Delhi and Nobash Kushali Pagi (44) from Khola.
They were arrested under section 384 read with 34 IPC. The stolen cash and mobile phone were recovered from their procession.
World Earth Day observed
PANJIM: Bougainvilla Hermitage, the popular senior’s community in Nachinola, organized a cleaning drive to observe ‘World Earth Day’ recently.
Approximately 60 people from the neighbourhood as well as residents and staff of Bougainvilla Hermitage, collected garbage around Nachinola village where people throw their garbage along the road. Over 200 sacks of garbage were collected and later segregated.
Michael and Tomoko Lobo, Directors of Bougainvilla Hermitage said it was a pity that even educated people didn’t care about Goa and hoped that the movement would contribute in making Goa a better place for our children.
Chief Guest, Ralph Paes, General Manager of well known Newspaper, ‘The Statesman’, supported this event with words of appreciation and encouragement to all participants and to Bougainvilla Hermitage.
It was a gratifying experience for all involved. The participants hoped that their efforts have set an example and that such drives are conducted all over Goa.
Dinesh Patel’s Err Ere Ire launched
MARGAO: Author Dinesh Patel launched his fourth book Err Ere Ire last week. His earlier books, India’s first book on casino Indian Jackpot and Goa’s first historical fiction 1961 Umbra of Disillusion have won rave reviews all over the country.
The fiction based on the lives of Goan sailors, takes a periscopic view of their lives and emotions both on and off land. The later part of the book transforms into a fast-paced murder mystery, where the killer is lost in the maze of unfolding circumstances.
The main story interludes various little stories within. Of complex human emotions, triumph of love in adversity, the reward of justice, the power of patience and portrays how the ireful eventually turns irenic. It also showcases how good deeds finally triumph, eventually dissolving the impending darkness that threatens to take over.
The ex-journalist, columnist and media personality has earlier written Goa’s first book on restaurants, Dining Out in Goa. The author, who has been approached by various publishing houses all over the country, is also set to release a children’s book, titled ‘Goan Tales’ next month.
Ocean Fitness gymnasium opens
MARGAO: A state-of-the-art world-class gymnasium, Ocean Fitness, has been opened at Colva recently.
Located in Queeny Crown building, Villa Nova, next to Ocean Spa & Salon, the gymnasium was inaugurated by Nuvem MLA Mickky Pacheco in the presence of former MP Ramakant Angle and other dignitaries.
Rajnesh Sharma of Ocean Fitness told newsmen that the venture promises a lot of facilities like one-to-one training, muscle building, dream shape, body toning, nutrition and diet, cardio-vascular training, certified trainers, clean environment, a juice and refreshment parlour, modern changing rooms, etc.

Incentive scholarship exam
PANJIM: State Council of Educational Research and Training, Alto-Porvorim, Goa will conduct an Incentive Scholarship Examination for Std IV (Pradnya Shodh) for the year 2012-13 in Marathi, Konkani and Urdu medium on April 28 from 10 am to 12 noon.

Alcoholics Anonymous anniversary
PANJIM: On the 34th anniversary of Alcoholics Anonymous, the group is organising a public awareness program on April 26 from 5.30 to 7.30 pm on ‘Alcoholism a Disease and Alcoholics Anonymous a Way Out’.
Deelip Dhavalikar, PWD executive engineer, will be the chief guest, Dr Rajesh Patil, Associate Professor Dept of Surgery, Goa Medical College and Dr Rajesh Dhume, senior psychiatrist, District Hospital, Mapusa will be the guests of honour. Fr Domnic Savio, Principal of Don Bosco High School, Panjim, will be the special invitee.
The programme is open to the public.
Two cardio consultants join GMC
PANJIM: Dr Shirish Borkar, consultant cardio-thoracic surgeon and Dr Manjunath Desai, consultant cardiologist have joined services in Goa Medical College and will be available for consultation on Tuesday and Thursday from 2.30 pm to 5 pm at OPD-4/5.

Dance competition
MARGAO: The Aquem Citizen’s United is organising ‘Dance Aquem Dance’ solo dance competition on April 27 from 7 pm at Sebastian D’Cunha Children’s park, opposite Costa factory, Aquem-Alto, Margao.
The competition will be held in two categories, for children aged 7 to 11 years and for the age group 12 to 15 years.
Entry is free and spot entries will be accepted between 5.30 and 7.30 pm.

PANJIM: Help India, a charitable trust registered in Panjim has organized a free medical camp at Gotlim, Navelim Village Panchayat, Piedade, Divar.
The medical camp will be held on April 28 from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm with renowned orthopedic specialist Dr Mahendra Kudchadkar and Dr Anupama Kudchadkar.
Youth atop tree draws attention
PONDA: A youth believed to be from outside the State drew attention when he stood atop a coconut tree for nearly two hours at Dattagad-Bethora, Ponda, on Wednesday evening.
According to sources, the youth was seen in the locality on Wednesday afternoon and residents noticed him on a coconut tree at about 6 pm and urged him to come down.
When he did not respond to their pleas, residents summoned Ponda Police and Ponda fire officers but he snubbed them as well.
In the meantime, a local tried to climb the tree and the youth suddenly jumped down clutching a coconut leaf and escaped unhurt. The youth was later detained by Ponda Police and will be sent for a medical examination.
