MARGAO: The Margao-Ponda road turned killer when two people travelling on a Dio scooter were crushed under the back wheels of a trailer along the Margao-Ponda highway at Solva junction, Uzro, Raia, while an 11-year-old boy fractured his right leg.
The deceased have been identified as Ganesh, 30, and Ibrahim, 32, both residents of Pratap Nagar, Ponda. The deceased along with the injured boy Nassir, son of Ibrahim, were on their way back to Ponda.
On reaching Solva junction at around 8.45 pm, the driver of the trailer behind the scooter is learnt to have lost control and rammed into the two-wheeler. The impact was such that one body was dragged to a distance of 12 meters while another to 59 meters. Both the bodies were badly crushed, said an eye witness.
Local MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, who rushed to the spot, had to face the ire of locals. They demanded immediate action against a shop on the turn which was causing hindrance to the traffic on the busy road.
Expressing grief over the incident, Lourenco said that he had already taken up the matter to widen the turn. He said he would take up the issue in the ongoing legislative assembly on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Margao DySP who was present at the site also promised the locals that he would accompany them to the South Goa Collector and explain the immediate need to widen the turn at the spot.
