The Modi government has been celebrating its one year in office by highlighting its achievements of the past year. This celebration is welcome as it showcases the genuine wonders of the BJP in India. The wonders of banning beef in some states, segregating people on religious beliefs, destroying Catholic churches and above all calls for ghar wapsi.
The PM’s foreign jaunts may have transformed India’s image abroad but people are yet to see any results within India of the high voltage propaganda that has been unleashed and splashed all over the front pages of our newspapers. Surely, the opposition parties must be jittery.
India, an old and highly acclaimed democracy should have shown greater maturity in the functioning of its government at the centre. The manner in which Parliament has been functioning is a disgrace, especially the way in which parliamentarians make a mockery of the institution. The lost hours of business speak volumes of the MPs, or rather the party’s, character. Very often the term ‘opposition’ has been bluntly misused to oppose every bill that is presented in Parliament. We have seen pandemonium in Parliament regarding each and every bill presented by either party. Who can forget the stacked bundles of cash that flowed on the floor of the house during the crucial vote of confidence at one time?
Like most developed nations, unity between the government and opposition is hardly seen at crucial junctures. Each party tries to outwit the other at every opportunity in the bargain losing a golden opportunity to do something good for the country and its citizens. What can future generations or future leaders learn from these dirty confrontational attitudes of our present parliamentarians?
