It is learnt from the newspapers that GSIDC has shot down the proposal to install some 600 odd CCTV cameras around Goa which was intended to record the accidents and/or traffic incidents and violations on our roads.
The specious plea in avoiding to install these cameras is that with CCTV there will be no reduction in traffic accidents/offences and it is best to limit the installation to certain specific areas which are known to be highly prone to traffic accidents. This argument is highly laudable considering it intends to save resources but it also sadly lacks looking at the larger perspective. And this is that with terrorism being seen as a tangible risk in our current times and law and order being constantly a greater threat to our lives, the CCTV cameras placed extensively over Goa will lead to a recording of such incidents as they happen and help in their investigation by providing valuable visual evidence.
Thus as a long term approach we should install the 600 CCTV cameras around Goa and also provide for proper lighting in the field of view of these cameras since in some incidents lately it was reported that with low light levels the images recorded by the CCTV cameras was not distinguishable.
