Goa is known for its hospitality and friendliness. That is the reason why tourists flock to Goa. Taxi-cabs, autorickshaws are not used as much as public buses. With a few exceptions, most of the cab and auto drivers charge hefty sums without relying on the meter.
The Transport directorate is also taking a careless approach to the issue. Most tourists complain about being looted by taxi and autorickshaw drivers. I was one made to pay Rs 300 for a rickshaw ride from Margao Railway Station to Arlem Junction. Thanks to the luggage I carried, I had no option.
If rent-a-cab service providers give better and more efficient service they should be welcomed. In cities like Pune, autorickshaws majorly charge accurate fares as per meters. If Goan taxi and cab operators charge reasonable amounts and give good service, no one can pose a threat to their business. This should not be made into a ‘sons of soil’ issue.
