Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said that caste today exists largely for selfish interests and political purposes, as its traditional occupational foundation has long ceased to exist.
Bhagwat made the remarks while responding to questions during an interactive session held as part of a programme marking the centenary of the RSS.

He observed that politicians often seek votes in the name of caste because caste identities continue to remain deeply rooted in society. “Politicians are driven more by electoral considerations than by ideology,” Bhagwat said.
Stressing the importance of harmony, the RSS chief called for sensitivity and a sensitive approach in dealing with caste-based conflicts. He said such issues must be addressed carefully to avoid further divisions and to promote social cohesion.
