Delhi’s air turns hazardous with several zones recording AQI above 400

Delhi’s air quality deteriorated sharply on Saturday, with several areas recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) above 400, placing the national capital in the ‘severe’ category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s average AQI stood at 361 at 4 pm, ranking it among the most polluted cities in India.

The worst-affected areas included Wazirpur (420), Burari (418), Vivek Vihar (411), Nehru Nagar (406), Alipur (404), and ITO (402). NCR cities such as Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad also reported ‘very poor’ air quality.

Experts attributed nearly 30% of the pollution to stubble burning and 15% to vehicular emissions. In response, the Delhi government revised office timings and deployed 200 anti-smog guns to curb emissions. Doctors warned that prolonged exposure could cause headaches, fatigue, and cognitive issues.
