Starting April 1, 2026, income tax filing in India will see major reforms with the implementation of the new Income-tax Rules, 2026. The updated framework introduces redesigned Income Tax Return (ITR) forms, replaces the widely used Form 16 with a new Form 130, and brings in a more automated filing system aimed at enhancing accuracy and compliance.
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of Form 130, which will take the place of Form 16 issued by employers. As per information provided by the Income Tax Department, the new form will continue to serve as a Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) certificate but in a more detailed and structured format.
Form 130 will function as the annual TDS certificate for salaried individuals and pensioners, offering a comprehensive summary of earnings. It will include details of salary received, tax deducted and deposited, as well as applicable deductions, making the filing process more streamlined and transparent.
The move is part of a broader effort by authorities to simplify tax compliance while reducing errors through automation and improved documentation.
