In a strong step aimed at ensuring passenger safety and maintaining service standards, Indian Railways has taken strict action over complaints of poor food quality onboard a Vande Bharat Express.
The railways imposed a penalty of ₹10 lakh on Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation after a passenger reported substandard food on Train No. 21896 (Patna–Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express) on March 15, 2026.
Authorities further tightened the action by levying a ₹50 lakh fine on the onboard catering service provider responsible for the food service. The railways have also directed the termination of the caterer’s contract.
According to an official statement shared by Indian Railways on X, the complaint was taken seriously and immediate steps were initiated. The statement noted that while IRCTC faced a monetary penalty, stricter action was taken against the service provider, including both a heavy fine and contract termination.
Reiterating its commitment, the railways stated that passenger safety and quality of service remain its top priorities, signaling a zero-tolerance approach towards lapses in onboard services.
