India pushes for climate justice as fossil fuels and finance take centre stage at COP30

At the COP30 Leaders’ Summit in Belem, Brazil, India made a powerful appeal for climate justice, demanding equitable global action rooted in the principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities. Ambassador Dinesh Bhatia urged developed nations to cut emissions faster and fulfil their financial pledges to developing countries. India highlighted its early achievement of revised climate targets, with non-fossil fuel sources now accounting for over 50% of power capacity and emission intensity reduced by 36%. It also joined Brazil’s new Tropical Forests Forever Facility as an Observer, reaffirming its dedication to forest conservation. Meanwhile, leaders, including President Lula, called COP30 the “COP of truth,” pushing for an end to fossil fuel dependence and increased climate finance. The summit witnessed the launch of global initiatives worth billions, signalling renewed urgency for fair and actionable climate policies.
