Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday strongly criticised the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal after President Droupadi Murmu publicly questioned the change of venue for the International Santhal Conference.
The President, who was visiting north Bengal as the chief guest for the event, expressed surprise that the venue had been shifted from Bidhannagar to Goshaipur, where attendance was reportedly low. She also asked whether Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was upset with her, noting that neither the chief minister nor any of her ministers had come to receive her during the visit.
Sharing a video of Murmu’s remarks on social media, Modi described the situation as “shameful and unprecedented”. He accused the ruling party of treating Santhal culture casually and said the incident had hurt people who believe in democracy and the empowerment of tribal communities.
The Prime Minister added that the pain expressed by the President, who herself comes from a tribal community, had caused deep sadness among people.
