MAPUSA: An inspection by Colvale panchayat, Deputy Collector and Water Resources Department (WRD) officials on Wednesday revealed that 10 shops, which were encroaching along the nullah, were discharging sewage into it at Gotnicho Val at Colvale.
The encroachments comprise of a hotel, car wash, two garages and two scrapyards. The local MLA, Nilkanth Halarnkar was also present at the inspection.
Colvale sarpanch Nitin Kandolkar informed Herald that an inspection was carried out at Colvale along with the various authorities and show cause notices have been issued to the concerned shop owners.
“It has been noticed that several shops have encroached along the nullah close to the national highway. To maintain the required setback from highway they have built their shops along the nullah. The panchayat had already sent notices to the concerned parties but now after this inspection the WRD will act in the matter,” Nitin said.
“The WRD has more powers to act in the matter. These shops were found without a soak pit and discharging their sewage into the nullah. We have already issued show cause notices to them. Their water and electricity connections will also be disconnected,” he added.
Over a week ago, the panchayat had disconnected the electricity and water connections to the 50-odd scrapyards operating within the jurisdiction of Colvale panchayat. The matter in currently in court and seven will be demolished on receiving an order.
