Habitual offender nabbed
MARGAO: Shabbir Mehboob Tatungi, 19, resident of Navelim who was wanted by Margao police for was nabbed by PSI Girendra Naik and his team while the former moving on railway track at Margao on Thursday morning.
Margao PI Sudesh Naik said that accused Tatungi, a habitual offender along with accused Joyti, on January 11, 2013, had waylaid Salvador Dias, of Mugali, St Jose de Areal on Margao flyover bridge at knifepoint and snatched from him a gold chain, Nokia mobile, wallet, two cheque slips, watch all worth Rs 1.37 lakh. While police arrested Jyoti and filed charge sheet against him, Tatungi was absconding. When he was caught on Thursday he was found carrying knuckle duster, blade and knife which have been attached. Further investigation is being carried by PSI Girendra Naik.
Complaint against Loutolim sarpanch
MARGAO: A citizen from Loutolim has lodged a complaint against village Sarpanch Maria Monteiro for allegedly registering her birth in Portugal and committing criminal offences under the Foreigners Act, Registration of Foreigners Act and Representation of People’s Act.
Maria, however, rubbished the allegations levelled by the complainant, Joaquim Gracias, saying she is very much an Indian citizen. “The allegations are false and baseless and are made with ulterior motives”, Maria asserted.
In his complaint, Joaquim, however, alleged that the Loutolim Sarpanch had registered herself as Portuguese national in 2011 and has therefore lost her Indian citizenship on that date under Article 9 of the Constitution. “The Sarpanch is continuing to hold membership of the village panchayat by falsely claiming to be an Indian citizen”, Gracias said, while praying that the police register a case against her and be tried, convicted and deported as per law. “The Sarpanch is not eligible to continue as panch or sarpanch of the panchayat by virtue of not being an Indian citizen”, he said.
New Year in S Goa incident free
MARGAO: Unlike last year, South Goa district went without any major incident of theft, accident or other illegal activities during the New Year festivities.
According to police sources, the beach belt at Colva and Benaulim alone witnessed over 25,000 people thronging the beach, various restaurants and dances to usher in the New Year.
The deployment of additional police force comprising 175 additional police personnel helped to intensify patrolling in the district.
South Goa SP Shekar Prabhudesai admitted that the additional policemen made available at his disposal were posted at various points, helping to make the police presence felt everywhere and to keep anti-socials at bay.
Geeta Gyana Yagna at Margao
MARGAO: Chinmaya Mission, Margao, will conduct the 29 Geeta Gyana Yagna at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, from January 6-12. The Yagna will be conducted by Pujya Swamini Vimalanandaji. Besides, Swami Pujya will hold special sessions for the youth and women on January 11, stated Chinmaya mission President Bipin Kantak.
Four men found dead
PANJIM: Four men were found dead in three separate incidents on New Year’s Day. According to Old Goa Police, Diganand Volvoikar (85) of Chodan was found hanging at his residence and the body has been preserved in GMC morgue in Bambolim for post-mortem. At Porvorim, Amar Rai (21) was found lying dead at a construction site at Green Hill, while the body of Shashikant Velip of Cavrem-Quepem was found hanging at his residence. The body has been preserved in GMC morgue in Bambolim for post-mortem. The body of a 36-year-old native of Bihar, but residing at Codli, Tisk-Dabal, was found floating at Dudhsagar River on Wednesday. Goa police is investigating all four cases.
Juvenile booked for sexual abuse
BICHOLIM: A juvenile boy has been accused of sexually abusing a 16-year-old girl in Bicholim. According to Bicholim Police, the girl’s mother complained that the incident occurred on December 22 when the juvenile took her daughter to a jungle area behind her house and had forcible sexual intercourse. The victim’s mother further stated that the accused threatened her daughter not to disclose the fact to anyone. Bicholim Police registered the case under Sections 376, 506 IPC and Section 8 (2) of Goa Children Act and PSI T P Walke is investigating the case.
Pedestrian injured in Mapusa mishap
PORVORIM: A resident of St Cruz, Ponda, was injured in a road accident at Morod, Mapusa. According to Porvorim Police, Tukaram Halarnkar complained that he was crossing the road near Kavlekar Collections, Morod, when the motorcycle, which was proceeding from Morod to municipal market, dashed against him, causing him injuries. Head Constable K T Gawas is investigating the case.
Shimoga woman detained
PONDA: Ponda forest officials on Thursday detained a woman from Shimoga-Karnataka, who was suspected to have been selling fake animal parts, including tiger claws and teeth, elephant hair and deer musk. Acting on a tip-off, the Ponda forest officials laid a trap and detained the woman. According to information, the woman was seen at Tisk-Ponda and was allegedly looking out for buyers of various animal body parts. After forest officials conducted a search, tiger claws, teeth and musk was found in the bag. Once in the net of the forest department, the woman claimed that the items recovered from her were not genuine. She further claimed that the tiger claws and teeth were made from goat bones, while the musk was made using flour with perfume covered with skin of the goat.
Later, Ponda forest officials contacted Paresh Parab, RFO of Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, to ascertain the articles seized. After inspecting the articles, Parab informed that the articles were fake and requested public not to purchase such items. The woman was later released.
Two Russian ‘guides’ held at Mollem
PONDA: Collem Police on Thursday arrested two Russians on charges of carrying out guiding activities at Mollem. Collem Police identified the two accused as Peter Kulis, residing at Candolim, and Daria Muchnikova, residing at Calangute. According to information, Collem Police acted on a complaint filed by a local resident claiming that the Russian nationals were engaged in guiding activities without valid permission. Both the Russians were arrested near the gate at the Dudhsagar waterfall route. Police said both the accused were later handed over to Goa Tourism Department, who reportedly imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 and released the duo after a warning.
Housewife hangs self at Gaondongrim
CANACONA: A 35-year-old housewife from Sirsi-Karnataka allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her rented house in Barse-Gaondongrim, Canacona, on Thursday morning. According to Canacona Police, Rajni Netrakar committed suicide by hanging to the rafter with the help of a saree. The body was recovered and sent for post-mortem. Police informed that Rajini had married some five years ago and since the death has occurred within 5 years of marriage, panchanama was conducted by SDM Prashant Shirodkar under 176 CrPC, informed police. In his statement to the police, the husband, Mantesh Naik, reportedly informed police that he had gone out of the house for some work and when he returned within half an hour, he noticed the body of his wife hanging from the kitchen rafter.
