BELGAUM: In a major haul of Goa made spurious liquor in Belgaum, the State excise and police officials along with Belgaum district police seized 3,081 Goa made liquor bottles from different locations in the district.
Police also seized liquor at check posts that have been erected at strategic locations along the Belgaum-Goa border.
Divulging details at a joint press conference with SP Sandeep Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Belgaum N Jayram stated that authorities have made a major breakthrough in checking the inflow of Goan liquor.
“After initiating stringent preventive measures on the verge of the elections to the City Corporations and local bodies in the district where the elections are being held on March 7 and 8 respectively, 182 persons indulged in illicit trade of cheap Goan liquor have been arrested with as many cases registered at different police stations in the district,” stated D C Jayram.
Speaking about special measures that are initiated, SP Patil said apart from preventive arrests, police have taken an undertaking from the rowdy sheeters who are normally indulged in anti-social activities including supplying of Goan liquor to the voters.
“Consumption of liquor has been completely banned from 6 am on March 7 until midnight of March 8, while 20 CCTV cameras that have been installed at strategic locations will maintain close vigil during the elections,” SP Patil ascertained.
Meanwhile, on the eve of elections, the district administration has declared half day holiday on Thursday to schools and colleges and a full day holiday on March 7.
“EVM’s along with all the ultra modern procedure will be implemented during the elections,” D C Jayram informed.
