MARGAO: Colva police arrested eight Goan taxi drivers today after a GoaMiles app service driver complained of him being illegally restrained, abused and being threatened to kill after he had picked some guests from a star hotel in Varca. The incident happened on June 7.
The eight taxi drivers allegedly also forcefully alighted the foreign guest from the taxi.
Those arrested were Emiliano Fernandes, Luis Bastian, Francisco Fernandes, Rocky Dsilva, Sebestiao Fernandes,
Narisco Fernandes, Joaquim Fernandes and Jose Duarte. They were later released on bail.
Meanwhile, many accused identified in the Goa Miles taxi damage case that happened in Colva earlier have moved for anticipatory bail which will be heard today.
Meanwhile, the app-based taxi services, is getting a strong backing on social media.
A rate card of the Varca Tourist Taxi Association was making rounds of the Social media on Tuesday. The chart did not have a single taxi tariff below Rs 4500 for a visit to any place in North or South Goa. The rate card shows a whopping Rs 8500 as charges for people intending to visit night clubs in North Goa.
Anger is also being expressed by people over the extravagant charging by the taxi owners, some have even gone ahead blaming that these irrational charges and unpleasant experiences are the main reasons for fall in tourists footfall of Goa. The hashtag taximafia is being used widely for expressing views.
