MARGAO: Borda residents and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members on Wednesday visited the office of the Executive Engineer Works Division IX of PWD and submitted a petition to Executive Engineer Sanjay Walvekar over the rampant wastage of water in Vidhyanagar, Borda and Fatorda.
They brought it to the notice of Walvekar that in Vidhyanagar treated water has been flowing from the PWD tank into the nullah for the last 10 years. According to their estimates, around 2000 litres flow every 5 minutes into the drain. “This is waste of water and waste of taxpayers’ money. The water flows down and gets accumulated in the area, which has turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes”, John Baptist said.
The delegation questioned whether the tank floater functions properly. They informed that it flows at the same time every night. “We have also informed the Council but no action has been taken. Children and senior citizens are most affected by this problem”, complained Savio Cotta.
Walvekar informed that they have two tanks in Borda and explained how the water is pumped from one tank to the other. He assured to inspect it and fix the problem within a week.
Some members complained of receiving water that too with low pressure. Walvekar informed that the low pressure problem is due to several factors. However, there have been breakdowns due to the frequent power outages.
“This year, we have experienced frequent power cuts, which have affected the pumping operations. Many pipelines are old and some were laid during the Portuguese era, which need to be replaced”, Walvekar informed.
Walvekar said that around 25% of water gets wasted in Margao, which includes illegally tapped water.
