MARGAO: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) volunteers stormed the PWD office at Fatorda demanding the authorities to urgently repair the road from Margao to Quepem which, the alleged, has been neglected for years.
AAP leader Patricia Fernandes from Quepem informed that many accidents have taken place on the route. She said that pregnant women and those suffering from gynaecological problems are worst affected.
“Two-wheeler riders pray while travelling to have a safe journey,” she added.
Ayub Khan of Fatorda said that roads in Fatorda and other places are the worst in India and the government needs to immediately take action. Melwyn Pereira of Navelim lamented that inner roads of Navelim are in bad shape and all are accident prone.
Sidharth Karapurkar said that because of rise in accidents, the RTO and police impose fine on people travelling on two-wheeler riders without helmet but nobody imposes fines on PWD for bad roads and it is the main cause of accidents.
The dilapidated condition of Margao-Quepem road was discussed during the last monsoon session of the Assembly. The road passes through four constituencies of Navelim, Cuncolim, Quepem and Curchorem.
Power Minister and Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral had stated that a single tender needs to be floated instead of floating multiple tenders for different sections of the road. The PWD minister had assured that he would repair the road; however, this assurance remains unfulfilled.
Meanwhile, AAP volunteers on Tuesday presented a memorandum to the Executive Engineer of Public Works Department pointing out the shoddy condition of the roads leading from Margao to Quepem and demanded that immediate relief be provided to people.
AAP Quepem Convenor Patricia Fernandes pointed out that all the three roads leading from Margao to Rawanfond are in a terrible condition as they have been dug anywhere and everywhere to install service lines and the patch work done later is pathetic.
