After the tar balls menace on different sea fronts of State’s coast, Agonda beach is now facing a different threat, as over 300 metres of the beach stretch is covered with pebbles (Kalyao).
According to locals, tonnes of river pebbles have washed ashore at the northern end of Agonda beach, almost burying the beach sands in the area to a stretch as long as 300 mtrs.
The quantum of river pebbles washed ashore is so much that beach sand is hardly seen in the area, as even few people who were fishing when this correspondent visited the shore were seen standing over these pebbles.
Interestingly, taluka’s third major river, River Saleri, which runs between twin villages of Agonda and Khola, joins Arabian Sea at this northern extreme end of Agonda beach and as locals says: “Washing over of pebbles at this beach portion is not new, especially after occasions of monsoon floods and rough sea, but the quantum witnessed this year is exceptionally high.”
Incidentally, activities of some people lifting the pebbles from the shore for using it in construction works is seen in the locality.
Pebbles (locally called Kalyao) are considered having rich value and grade and many prefers it as favourite mixture for concrete construction works.
