ALDONA: Several pressing civic concerns, including road repairs, garbage management, illegal constructions, and water scarcity, were discussed at the Aldona Gram Sabha, which witnessed participation from over 100 members.
Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Ferreira infored the gram sabha members that files related to road works have already been submitted to the concerned authorities, and hotmixing of roads will be undertaken soon across the constituency. He clarified that due to lack of funds with the panchayat, road works are being executed through the Public Works Department (PWD). Gram Sabha members urged that pending pothole patchwork be completed before the onset of the monsoon, to which the panchayat assured timely action.
Addressing a recent controversy regarding an injured dog, the MLA clarified that the incident occurred in Porvorim and not Aldona. The stray dog was brought for treatment, but was mistakenly reported as an Aldona issue. He further assured that if any alleged illegal animal shelter is found operating, it will be shut down and animals will be rehabilitated through authorized NGOs.
Residents from Naikavaddo raised concerns over long-pending road repairs, claiming repeated representations to the panchayat and ward members have yielded no results over the past 20 years. They also highlighted accidents caused due to poor road conditions. The panchayat reiterated that repair works would be taken up before the monsoon.
The issue of unregulated cable lines was also discussed, with members demanding a public list of cable operators so that fallen or damaged cables can be reported promptly. The panchayat has sought details from concerned authorities to make the information available.
Concerns were raised about the lack of an official animal shelter in Aldona. While some NGOs provide support, members stressed the need for a dedicated facility. The Sarpanch suggested identifying land for such a shelter, while one member urged that an application be made to the Communidade for allocation of land.
Garbage dumping emerged as a major concern, with residents pointing to increasing instances across the constituency. While the Sarpanch stated that identified garbage “hotspots” are cleared promptly, the MLA emphasized that indiscriminate dumping continues despite installation of CCTV cameras. He appealed to citizens to act responsibly and maintain cleanliness.
Illegal constructions were also highlighted, particularly structures violating road setbacks and blocking access. Members demanded strict enforcement and insisted that all construction sites must prominently display project details.
Water scarcity and the proliferation of swimming pools sparked significant debate. The Gram Sabha unanimously resolved to restrict permissions for swimming pools unless adequate water sources are ensured, citing growing concerns over water shortages. The MLA also warned about certain complexes using high-powered pumps that deplete water supply, urging residents to report such activities.
Members further appealed for proper garbage segregation and encouraged composting practices to reduce waste dumping.
A major point of discussion was the proposed conversion of playground land under Section 39A. The proposal was strongly opposed by members, who unanimously resolved against any such conversion for settlement purposes, particularly involving playgrounds. MLA Ferreira informed that he has already submitted a strong objection to the concerned authorities and will personally pursue the matter with the minister to safeguard village spaces.
No new government scheme applications were presented during the meeting.
