Although the Public Works Department (PWD) has said that within the next ten days the digging of roads will completely stop in Panjim, it has caused a lot of inconvenience to locals and commuters who visit the State’s capital.
In Panjim, presently there is digging of roads going on at a few places. In most places, it has been completed after laying respective pipelines. However, there are a few locations in the capital where digging work continues to facilitate laying of water and sewerage pipelines. The heart of the city is relatively untouched but outskirts like St Inez and Altinho etc are presently affected.
Bhanudas Malik, a commuter said, “Coordination is key between all the agencies linked with laying of underground pipelines and the PWD which is responsible for repairing roads. Unfortunately, the PWD is caught in a funny cycle wherein they repair roads and then within a few days, dig them up again. This is hilarious.”
At present, the work of laying a water pipeline is on at Altinho hill from the water tank to the department of factories and boilers and at V D Marg. The digging at Altinho is affecting regular traffic.

Why – Laying of sewerage line de ground which is also causing a lot of difficulty to locals and commuters. According to PWD officials, they have also obtained permission from the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) to dig the road at Miramar near Miramar residency and at Campal from Adarsh Nivas to Military Hospital. A PWD engineer said that the Campal digging work will not be taken up now as it involves a high percentage of work being done and will not be completed within ten days. However, the digging work at Miramar will be undertaken as it is a mere one day job.
What remains post the digging work are large potholes which get neglected by authorities and these in turn cause massive inconvenience to the public. Not a single dug road in Panjim has been tarred up to the mark and brought back to its original size.
