MARGAO: Tired of seeing garbage being strewn all over the roads and open spaces, Aquem Baixo panchayat decided to do something about it and keeping this in mind, Sarpanch Siddhesh and his team kept vigil and  traced persons dumping garbage in an open space in the village jurisdiction on Wednesday.
The Sarpanch forced the wrongdoer who was caught red-handed to pick his bag back and take also another bag from the waste area home.
In a bid to send a strong signal to people dumping garbage in the open the panchayat has started an anti-garbage dumping vigilance activity. Aquem Baixo panchayat is amongst the many neighbouring panchayats of Margao which has been suffering due to unethical garbage dumping on road sides and open areas.
A person came with a garbage bag full of wet waste, was stopped and questioned by the sarpanch. The person, who is said to live in a room in Aquem Baixo, was made to pick a garbage bag from the dump and warned not to repeat the act again.
The sarpanch said this would be a permanent feature now, so that the people and commercial establishments are discouraged from throwing waste in the open. He informed that the panchayat was in process of getting segregation and sorting facility, to enable proper collection and treatment.
“I request the people to consider our panchayat as their own house and stop littering. The panchayat is finding a solution and will soon answer your queries,” he said.
