TIVIM: Claiming that authorities had shown little interest in a heritage site, a group of youth from Assago decided to restore an age-old structure, locally known as ‘kator’.
The youth have also decided to stage an art and music festival at the ‘kator’ in April. Some 50-odd residents of Assagaon assembled at the site and pledged to protect the structure. The youth then cleared the bushes and later painted the structure.
“Though we had invited the Assagao panchayat members to attend the programme, no one turned up,” said a youth Felly Gomes.
“The ‘kator’ is a heritage site at Assagao and it is unfortunate that the authorities have failed to preserve this heritage structure. We were left with no option but to restore this structure by ourselves,” Gomes added.
Gomes also appealed to the people to work united to address the garbage issue plaguing Assagao.
On the occasion, Leo Dias, an environmentalist, explained about his involvement in the plastic collection drive at Siolim.
He also volunteered to collect plastic from Assagao. Other speakers at the programme included Shivaji Gaad, Clayton Fonseca, Rodney D’Souza and Sadanand Nagvekar.
