PANJIM: INS Sumedha will be formally commissioned by Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief East on March 7 at Goa Shipyard Ltd
Sumedha, the largest offshore patrol ship indigenously designed and built by GSL for the Indian navy will join the eastern naval command at Vizag.
Rear Admiral (retired) Shekhar Mital CMD of GSL in his message said “This warship is the culmination of many years of in-house design development and ship building techniques. The commissioning of this ship, marks a significant milestone in GSL’s and nation’s march towards indigenization and self reliance. It becomes more important as Sumedha is the 200th ship indigenously built by GSL.”
Sumedha will help meet the increasing requirement of the Indian navy for undertaking ocean surveillance and surface warfare operations in order to prevent infiltration and transgression of maritime sovereignty, says a GSL press note
PRACTICE?FIRING: The Naval Coast Battery, Mormugao will carry out practice firing of 105 mm IFG and 40/60 A/A guns from Mormugao, Headland, Sada, Goa between 10am and 1pm on March 12. The danger zone lies within an area bounded by 2000 to 2600 from Mormugao Headland Flag Staff position up to a distance of 20 nautical miles seaward and flying height of 6500 m.
