PONDA: The Amchi Vypari Sangatana (AVS), an association of Ponda market vendors at Ponda Muncipal Market on Monday in written memorandum to the Chief Officer of Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) strongly objected to the collection of “sopo” from the street vendors.

According to Garu Sawant, president of AVS, the PMC has floated tender dated October 22 for collection of “sopo” from the street vendors.
Sawant pointed out that as per Street Vendors Act (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending Act 2014) the street vendors, hawkers and the people who are selling their goods on the streets are being prohibited from paying the taxes to the government authority. However, the new tender floated by the PMC is totally to contrary to the provisions laid down under Street Vendors Act 2014. Hence, it is completely violating the rules under the above mentioned law hence AVS members strongly object the PMC floating new tender to collect “sopo” from poor street vendors which nowhere mentioned in Act and which also would affect their livelihood.
