MAPUSA: Driving on the roads proceeding towards Baga has become a matter of concern for commuters and tourists as the road is caving in at multiple places. Recently four such incidents of caving of road were witnessed on the Baga-Calangute road.
Locals informed that such incidents occur every year where the road caves in and have turned dangerous for people to travel on. Due to this, the road is now blocked and barricaded at different locations and is causing major inconvenience to locals as well as tourists.

Locals have also expressed concern and fear for their lives to travel on this road especially during the night when the road cannot be seen clearly. People have also blamed the local authorities for carrying sub-standard work of sewerage projects which is resulting in caving of roads during every monsoon for past few years.
A local youth said, “In the name of development, destruction is going on. A project, which could not completed in seven years, how can they expect it to complete in one year? They should stop the project work and fill up the underground pipeline because this project has turned into a death trap for people moving on this road”.
“Every monsoon this situation occurs where the road caves in and what the authorities do is brush up the potholes with stones and concrete layers which again get damaged within two days due to heavy rains. People are scared to move on this road (Calangute to Baga) because anytime the road can cave in. This problem needs concrete solution”, he added.
Premanand Diukar president of Calangute Constituency Forum said, “The condition of the road from Calangute to Baga is such that nobody can feel safe to drive on. This happens every year during rains. There is a need for proper planning for development. We want sustainable development but what is happening is destructive development”.
