Highlighting the rising traffic problem along the Belgaum-Goa National Highway (NH-4-A), Belgaum Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BCCI) has urged authorities to ban movement of mining and other trucks on these stretches.
In a memorandum submitted to the Additional Superintendent of police, the Chamber has stated that the stretch on the road from Udyambag to Ramdev Circle on Khanapur road, fish market, College road, Club road including the road from Chennamma Circle to Fort and towards NH4 from For Lake and New Gandhi Nagar have become death traps.
“The movement of heavy vehicle multi-axle trucks causes a lot of inconvenience to other commuters on the road. Such trucks are responsible for many accidents directly or indirectly,” stated Members of the Chamber.
“So, the movement of such trucks during the day in the City from 8 am to 8 pm should be banned with immediate effect,” members of the Chamber urged police authorities.
The Chamber in its memorandum further stated that major problem in city market and other main roads is due to hawkers.
Vegetable vendors have posed serious problems in the busy retail business area. The hawkers are expected to move from place-to-place, but they have established fixed vending, causing inconvenience for general public and also adding to traffic congestion in the city.
The BCCI members have urged police officials to clear the busy city roads in the main city market and from Ramadev Hotel to Peeranwadi and declare them as ‘No Hawkers Zone’.
