MARGAO: Cuncolim Municipal Council’s grandiose plan to beautify and restore the Cuncolim Chieftains Memorial Park under the State Golden Jubilee fund has hit a block.
More than two years after the beautification work was tendered by the civic body at an estimated cost of Rs 55 lakh, work on the beautification project is still dragging on. To make matters worse, the contractor is believed to have asked for further extension of time to complete the project, the second extension in the last two years.
An agitated Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Devendra Desai on Monday has told the Municipal technical section to dash off a letter to the contractor to complete the work at the earliest. If the CMC Chairperson is to be believed, work on the project has come to a halt since the last three months, further delaying the project.
“The delay in completing the beautification project is totally unacceptable. For the last three months, work had literally come to a stop. The civic body wanted to complete the project at the earliest so that it could be inaugurated on July 15 when Cuncolkars commemorate the 1583 revolt against the Portuguese every year”, Desai said.
The beautification project includes construction of a retaining wall, installation of water fountains, landscaping and redesigning of the Chieftains memorial.
The Chieftains memorial was built in the year 2000 to pay homage to the village chieftains who were assassinated by the Portuguese at the Assolna fort after being invited for peace talks.
