Bhoma meet disrupted

PONDA: Angry residents disrupted Gram-Sabha proceedings at Bhoma-Adcolna on Sunday, after accusing the male panchas of deliberately preventing a woman panch from becoming the Sarpanch.
The Sarpanch’s post is reserved for woman in the seven-member Bhoma-Adcolna Panchayat, which has five male panchas.
The meet ended in barely 15 minutes as villagers did not allow the proceedings to continue. They claimed that Deputy Sarpanch Damodar Naik had assured during the last Gram Sabha that they would appoint a woman sarpanch. Villagers even passed a resolution that they will not allow any Gram Sabha in future until a women panch is elected as Sarpanch.
It may be recalled that a meeting to elect the new Sarpanch was postponed twice in absence of a panch to second the nomination. Panch Mahima Naik had filled the form on two occasions and her nomination was proposed by another woman panch, Varsha Naik.
On one occasion, the male panchas had boycotted the election of the sarpanch, while on the second occasion, they were present at the meeting but none of the male panchas seconded Mahima Naik’s candidature to the sarpanch’s post.
