PANJIM: Alleging that the present BJP government is out to destroy Mahatma Gandhi’s values, the Congress on Wednesday accused the saffron party of ruling the country through violence, lies and intolerance.
On the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) held a padyatra from Bainguinim to Old Goa, chanting Gandhiji’s Bhajan and placards of Gandhi thoughts.
Speaking on the occasion, All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Dr A Chellakumar recalled how Mahatma Gandhi fought and struggled with truth and non-violence. “However, today’s Government is out to destroy his values and it is the duty of every Congressman to protect and fight to uphold such values to keep our country united,” he said.
GPCC president Girish Chodankar said that government should not just remember Gandhiji only for a day on Gandhi Jayanti but work on the path of Gandhiji’s ideology.
“Government should follow the principles of truth, non-violence, tolerance, peace and freedom. But the BJP government today is running the country through practices of violence, lies, intolerance,” he charged.
Chodankar appealed to the government to adopt economic policies of Mahatma Gandhi to restore today’s economy.
Earlier addressing the workers, Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat said, “We have to imbibe values of Mahatma Gandhi in our personal and public life. Today, the country is in need of principles of Mahatma Gandhi. Everyone was wondering how India can gain freedom without use of weapons but Gandhiji proved to the world that non-violence is stronger than weapons”.
In the morning, Congress also celebrated Lal Bahadur Shastri’s birth anniversary at its head office.
